Workplace Health & Safety Officer (Entry Level / Cadetship Opportunity)

Normanton, QLD

Looking for a fresh start or a new direction? This could be it.

Carpentaria Shire Council is offering a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to step into the world of Workplace Health and Safety.

Whether you’re starting your career, returning to the workforce, or looking to transition into a meaningful role with purpose-this position provides a supported pathway to build a career in WHS.

About the role

This is a hands-on, entry-level position supporting the delivery of Council’s Workplace Health and Safety programs. You’ll work closely with our WHS Coordinator and gain real-world experience across a diverse and dynamic regional environment.

No two days will look the same-one day you might be updating safety systems, the next coordinating training or supporting on-site safety activities.

This role is designed as a development opportunity, with support to build your knowledge, skills, and confidence in WHS over time. You don’t need to be a WHS expert-we’re looking for the right attitude.

 What you’ll be doing

  • Maintaining safety records, systems, and registers
  • Assisting with incident and hazard reporting and follow-up
  • Coordinating training, inductions, and compliance tracking
  • Supporting workplace inspections and safety initiatives
  • Preparing reports, documentation, and communications
  • Working closely with teams across Council to support safe work practices

 What we’re looking for

  • Interest in health, safety, or compliance
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and general systems)
  • Good communication skills and confidence working with people
  • High attention to detail and ability to stay organised
  • A proactive, can-do mindset and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Current driver’s license (or ability to obtain)

 Highly regarded

  • Previous admin experience
  • Any exposure to WHS, construction, local government, or similar environments

What we offer

  • A genuine career pathway into WHS
  • Support for training and development (including formal qualifications)
  • A supportive team and leadership that values safety and growth
  • The chance to make a real impact in a close-knit regional community
