We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to oversee day-to-day functions and to provide leadership to the Normanton Sports Centre. This is a great opportunity to provide a wide range of sporting, recreational and leisure activities to the local community.
To succeed in this role, you must have the ability to lead and inspire a team to deliver a high quality service. Ideally, you will have experience in the events or recreation and leisure industry and be passionate about encouraging participation within the community. Accordingly, experience in marketing and promotion will be highly regarded.

Primary Objectives of the Position
The purpose of the Centre Coordinator – Normanton Sports Centre is to oversee the day-to-day functions of the Normanton Sports Complex whilst providing a wide range of high quality sporting, recreational and leisure activities that are relevant to the needs of the local community. The Centre coordinator is required to supervise the Pool Coordinator and other Normanton Sport and Recreation Staff. The Centre Coordinator will liaise closely with the Karumba Recreation Coordinator.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Staff Supervision- Responsible for the Normanton Pool Coordinator and Sports and Recreation Staff. This includes managing rosters and time sheets and dealing with day-to-day issues. The usage of Sports and Recreation Staff is subject to Council Budgetary constraints.
- Centre Utilisation - Manage the utilisation of the sports centre including outside hirers and public opening hours.
- Policies and Procedures - Implement policies and procedures in consultation with the Manager, Economic and Community Development and Manager, Human Resources.
- Sport & Recreation Programs - Design, develop and deliver sports programs in partnership with other community organisations and sports service providers.
- Participation - Develop strategies to encourage participation in sporting and recreation activities by the community.
- Supervision of Centre Users - Supervise pool and sports centre users to ensure their safety and the good care of the facilities.
- Cash Handling – Ensuring appropriate cash handling techniques and relevant policies are adhered to and are recorded to ensure honesty and transparency.
- Sports Equipment - Maintain an inventory of Council and Sporting Group equipment. Ensure the usage of Council’s equipment is monitored, damage is recorded and the requirement for new or replacement equipment is recorded. A full inventory on Council sporting equipment is to be completed least twice a year..
- General Maintenance - Identify and attend to maintenance requirements or notifying and co-coordinating appropriate Council personnel so to ensure a high standard and presentation of the Centre.
- Funding - Identify possible sources of funding for sporting and recreation activities if required.
- Legislation - Ensure that the Centre functions in accordance with Council’s Safety Management System, Workplace, Health and Safety Legislation, the requirements of the Royal Life Saving Society, and Equal Employment Opportunity responsibilities.
- Accidents/Incidents - Ensure all accidents/incidents are handled by the staff on duty, in the format required, and reported to appropriate management as soon as practical.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance of Centre – Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of the Centre by liaising with relevant Council staff.
- Prepare particular reports as and when requested.
- Monitor the Facility and Staffing budget in conjunction with the Manager of Economic and Community Development.
- Attend monthly interagency meetings and provide updates around sporting and recreational activities
- Meet with stakeholders to engage groups to use the sports centre and pool for activities during the day or afternoons.
- Other duties deemed to be within skill and accountability levels.
Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people in the delivery of high quality sporting and recreational activities.
- An understanding of the needs of the population in the remote regions of Australia with a high Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate and mediate.
- Skills in marketing and promotion with regard to engaging the community, especially young people.
- Ability to work with different sporting groups in a collaborative manner.
- High level communication skills with the ability to negotiate and mediate where necessary.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to work in a team environment and contribute to a positive and harmonious workplace.
Knowledge
- Knowledge and awareness of Workplace Health and Safety issues in relation to operating and managing a sporting and aquatic facility.
- Knowledge of, or ability to acquire knowledge of, key funding processes for services to the community.
Qualifications/Licenses
- Working with Children Suitability “Blue Card”.
- Current class "C" driver's licence.
- Apply First Aid Certificate & CPR Certificate
- Pool Lifeguard Certificate or the ability to obtain.
