Carpentaria Shire Council has an exciting opportunity for a Hatchery Technician to care for the most integral part of the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre (LWBDC) - the barramundi stock! The LWBDC is a major tourist attraction within the Shire and is located at Karumba.
What we do.....
- Breed and release thousands of baby barramundi into the wild every year
- Offer interactive tours, giving visitors the chance to get up close and personal with our metre plus barramundi
- Welcome visitors to our region, promoting our town, local businesses, and artists
- Serve great coffee and food!
What you will do.....
Reporting to the Manager of the LWBDC, your responsibilities will include:
- planning and managing hatchery and exhibition stock
- operating and maintaining a variety of aquaculture equipment including microscopes, pumps, aquarium hardware and recirculating aquaculture systems
- managing fish stock including, developing the brood and exhibition stock collection, feed management and manufacturing, health monitoring, water quality monitoring and aeration monitoring
- developing spawning schedules in conjunction with the LWBDC Manager
- dispersing fingerlings, including transport
- maintaining the pond
- performing tour guiding duties and contributing towards tourism experiences and education programs.
To be considered, you must have a strong understanding of aquaculture principles including RAS, aeration, filtration, feeding, oxygen, ozone, UV, pumps and water quality monitoring and management. You must also be highly organising with the ability to multi-task during period of high workload.
